Arms, the Switch fighting game, is a lot more involved than Wii Fit boxing flailing

Arms isn’t just a hand waving novelty game, because the Switch can do a lot more than the Wii.

Switch exclusive Arms is going to suffer for the stigma of motion controls, but you can tell Nintendo has a lot of faith in it: during the Switch launch event reveal, the platform holder described the characters of Arms as Nintendo’s next big heroes.

Although Nintendo described it as accessible and intuitive, it sounds like there’s more to Arms than just random flailing, and Arekkz‘s experiences with the game at the Switch UK showcase seems to have borne out that impression.

The video above had to be captured over the shoulder, unfortunately, but at least that also allows you to watch the controllers in action. It doesn’t look like you can win a game of Arms just by windmilling about, like you can in so many motion controlled games. That said, you can occasionally beat even very good fighting game players by randomly smashing the keys, so who knows?

Arms is coming to Switch in northern spring. It’s one of a number of brand-new first-party titles announced for the system.

It’s no Super Smash Bros., but it sounds like a laugh, and that’s something Nintendo’s pretty keen on.
