Super Mario Odyssey’s co-op mode lets one player control Cappy

Super Mario Odyssey won’t let you bring Luigi along for the ride, but it will let a second player fling Mario’s hat around.

During this gameplay demo of Super Mario Odyssey (one of a few we’ve posted about: here’s New Donk City and Wooded Kingdom footage), the presenters show off Super Mario Odyssey’s co-op mode, which was alluded to earlier in the week.

The footage of co-op starts at around 4:30 in the video above, when one of the Joy Cons in the player’s hands is given to another presenter. Nintendo wanted take advantage of the fact that the Switch comes with two controllers by default, hence the mode. It’s similar to the co-op mode from Super Mario Galaxy, but a bit more involved – the player can move Cappy around attacking enemies and flying wherever they want.

In this mode, Cappy can’t actually collect Moons (the Odyssey equivalent of Stars), which is good – since Cappy can fly around making it too powerful might break the game.

The footage shows the two completing a simple puzzle together. Cappy is invincible, they clarify, so it can protect Mario from enemies without issue. In co-op, Cappy can fly around even if Mario’s hands are full (which would usually prevent him from throwing the hat).

Eventually Mario and Cappy wander back into town and Cappy proceeds to beat the hell out of some friendly NPC skeletons, which is pretty neat. Their little skulls start spinning!

The demo runs for half an hour, most of which is played in single-player, so give it a look for even more insight into the next big Mario game. Super Mario Odyssey is due to release for Nintendo Switch on October 27, 2017.
