This Hololens program does a better job of bringing Mario into New York than the Super Mario Bros. movie did.
Super Mario Bros world 1-1 has been recreated in just every game builder you could name. It’s iconic. Yet seeing it in VR, with Microsoft Hololens, still feels new.
This video comes courtesy of Abhishek Singh, who recreated the level himself. He dresses up in Mario’s outfit for his jaunt down an augmented Central Park, as one does.
Of course, a lot of the obstacles need to be walked around rather than jumped up, since none of them exist as physical barriers, but there’s still something just a little scary about staring down a hole in the abyss that Singh jumps over.
It’s maybe not as amazing as the Portal Hololens demo we’ve seen, nor the Pokemon one (both by ‘Kenny W’), but this is still fantastic – and weirdly thrilling when Singh actually steps into the castle at the end, since the player usually doesn’t get to do that.
Of course, right now, Hololens isn’t available to the general consumer, and is available only as a very expensive developer’s kit. It’s not yet clear when this will change. Don’t expect an actual Mario game for the device though, of course – although it’s worth remembering that Nintendo is interested in VR.
