Super Smash Bros Switch is finally on the horizon. In their latest Direct, Nintendo revealed a 2018 release date for Smash, along with a couple of cheeky character teases. Here’s a list of the confirmed character roster, as well as a few of the more tangible rumours.
Super Smash Bros Switch Characters Roster:
- Inkling Girl/Boy
After their crossover appearance in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the Inkling Kids seem to be making their full Smash Bros debut on the Switch. They were previously available on the 3DS and Wii U versions as DLC costumes for Mii Fighters.
- Mario
Although he may or may not still be a plumber, Mario is ever present in the world of Nintendo. Following his most recent, fan-favourite and critically-acclaimed, outing in Super Mario Odyssey, Mario looks set to lead the line in another of Nintendo’s best loved franchises.
- Link
The second character to be revealed as a teaser at the end of the grandiose announcement trailer, Link will be returning to Smash Bros. In the trailer, Link seems to be wearing his Breath of the Wild outfit, which leaves the door open for more variants of the character to appear. Young Link was part of the roster in Smash Bros Melee, before being replaced by Toon Link from Brawl onwards.
Unconfirmed characters, rumours and theories:
In the reveal trailer, we got a glimpse of what looked like the assembled roster stood in front of the series logo. Pause the embedded video above at around 48 seconds for the best view.
Otherwise, here’s a screenshot.
- Samus Aran
We’d recognise those shoulders anywhere. Samus is one of the safer bets to make the Smash Bros Switch roster, stood just to the right of centre.
- Donkey Kong
To the left of the crowd, you can see what seems to be DK’s famous tufty hair. He’s been in every Smash so far and, with Tropical Freeze out on Switch soon, there doesn’t seem to be a reason to bin him now.
- Kirby
There look to be a couple of short, spherical-looking characters dotted around the shot. It stands to reason that at least one of them – especially the one left of centre – could be another series mainstay, Kirby.
- Jigglypuff
On the subject of short, spherical characters, another returning character that fits that description is the Pokemon Jigglypuff. Jigglypuff looks to be right of centre, at Samus’ feet.
- Pikachu
It’d make sense to stand the Pokemon together, and to the left of Jigglypuff you can just about make out the distinctive pointy ears of series mascot Pikachu.
- Marth
Everyone knows someone who’s awesome with Marth, he’s been one of the series’ most strongest characters since he was introduced. The character’s shadow with a long draped cape over the shoulder looks like him, so we wouldn’t surprised to see him return.
- Bowser
To the right of centre, you can see a the horned head of King Koopa himself, Bowser. He didn’t make the roster in the original Smash Bros, but has been in every game since.
Can you make out anyone else? Give your reasoning in the comments and I’ll add them to the list.
