Codename Savage returns to PUBG with a new name this week

Codename: Savage is back in PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds test servers this week, and with its official name.

Codename: Savage isn’t due for an official PUBG launch for another two months, but thankfully there’s still public testing to do. The new map will return to open test servers on Thursday, and this time everyone with a Steam copy can play it for themselves.

What’s more, PUBG Corp has finally revealed Codename: Savage’s actual name: Sanhok.

“This new map is inspired by a wide variety of islands across southeast Asia, including those found in Thailand and the Philippines,” the PUBG team announced in a Steam Community update. “To reflect that inspiration, we invented a sort of hodgepodge combination of two words:

“First, the Thai word for “fun:” สนุก (pronounced like “sah-nook”)

“Second, the Filipino (Tagalog) word for “chicken:” manok (pronounced like “mah-nok”)

“Combine the two and you get Codename: Savage’s new name: Sanhok (pronounced “sah-nok”). It’s grown on us quickly, and we hope all of you come to love it as much as we do!”

Yes, that’s correct: The latest map name for PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is a reference to a fun chicken dinner. Winner winner, indeed.

The bigger news here is that PUBG’s Closed Experimental Server will turn into an “Experimental Server”. This means testing maps will be available to all Steam players without needing a special access code. This open beta will run from the following dates and times:

  • TESTING BEGINS: Thursday May 10, 7pm PDT / Friday May 11, 4am CEST / 11am KST
  • TESTING ENDS:Monday May 14, 4am PDT / 1pm CEST / 8pm KST

This should be the last testing period before Sanhok launches sometime in July, so don’t miss this chance to play the map early!
