Fortnite is joining the world of esports, with Epic Games announcing prize pools of $100,000,000 for competitions over the coming season.
Epic Games has announced that it will be providing $100,000,000 for Fortnite esports tournament prize pools in the 2018-2018 season.
“Since the launch of Fortnite Battle Royale we’ve watched the passion for community competition grow and can’t wait to empower you to battle with the best,” read the update.
“In the 2018 – 2019 season, Epic Games will provide $100,000,000 to fund prize pools for Fortnite competitions. We’re getting behind competitive play in a big way, but our approach will be different – we plan to be more inclusive, and focused on the joy of playing and watching the game.”
Fortnite’s most recent LTM, Solo Showdown, was the first time we saw a battle royale leaderboard with rewards in-game. At the time, Epic said it was “a one-off stepping stone to learn how to build great events for all types of players,” going on to say that it had a “major announcement about competitive play” to share this week.
Epic hasn’t divulged any further details on its plans for upcoming tournaments, the format, or how players can sign up to be a part of it.
We’ll hear more about the “competitive structures and eligible platforms” in the next few weeks.
