Nintendo Switch sales top 22.86 million, overtaking the GameCube

Nintendo has shared an update about sales of Switch hardware, and some of the platform’s biggest games.

In its report for the six months ended September 30, Nintendo revealed that Switch has sold 22.86 million units so far. This puts it ahead of the GameCube’s lifetime total of 21.74 million.

In these six months, Nintendo sold 5.07 million Switch consoles, which is up 3.7% compared to the same period last year. Nintendo still expects to ship 20 million units by the end of March, 2019.

The NES Classic Mini, and SNES Classic Mini combined sold 3.69 million units in the same period.

42.13 million units of Switch games were sold during the six months, a whopping 91.3% increase year-on-year. This includes first, and third-party games. More recent, first-party releases like Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (1.67 million), and Mario Tennis Aces (2.16 million) both joined the million seller club.

Overall, Super Mario Odyssey remains the Switch’s top-seller, with 12.17 million, followed by Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’s 11.71 million, and Zelda: Breath of the Wild with 10.28 million.

In its eighth year, the 3DS continues to make a lot of money, despite the overall decline. The handheld sold 1 million units, and 6.27 million copies of games. Both values are drastically below year-on-year, but that’s to be expected.

Nintendo also noted superb digital performance, both for full games and add-on content. This particular segment saw a 71.7% growth compared to the same period last year.
