When you’re hitting Pokemon Go gyms or raids, Pokemon Types matter – so allow us to guide you through the strengths and weaknesses of every Pokemon type on the game with our handy Pokemon Go Type Chart.
As hardcore Pokemon fans will already know quite well, all Pokemon fall into one of a few different categories – ‘types’. A Pokemon can have one or two types, and types determine a number of things about that Pokemon. For one it determines where the Pokemon likes to live, but more importantly a Pokemon type also determines battle strengths and weaknesses.
There’s 18 different types, and each type is either strong, weak or neutral to other types. At the most basic level with the starter Pokemon this breaks down to Rock, Paper, Scissors – Charmander (Fire) beats Bulbasaur (Grass) who beats Squirtle (Water) – and of course to complete that circle Squirtle’s water-type beats Charmander’s fire-type, because water would douse flames. That all makes sense and is nice and easy – though things get more complicated when you start introducing more obtuse Pokemon Types types like Fairy or Dragon, or when you consider Pokemon with multiple types.
In the case of Pokemon that can evolve multiple ways type can also influence which you might want – as our page on Eevee Evolution in Pokemon Go explains. Basically, this Pokemon Go Type Chart should be used in conjunction with the Best Pokemon in Pokemon Go to build a formidable team for battling in gyms and raids.
Pokemon Go Type Chart: Strengths, Effectiveness, Weaknesses and Resistances explained
If a Pokemon is giving you trouble at a gym or during a raid, consider their type and try to structure your team so that you have the correct Pokemon type and the right moves attached to that Pokemon in order to make battles go your way. Remember that both Pokemon moves and Pokemon themselves have types, too!
It can all get a bit complicated – so, yes, you can have a Fire and Dragon type Pokemon who also has a Flying-type move, and all of that might factor in to how effective that move is when you use it. Every type of Pokemon has four different relationships with other types any trainer should be aware of. That is:
- Strong Against: represented on our chart as Strong Vs, attacks from the listed type against the type listed here will do double damage to your opponent.
- Weak Against: represented here as Weak Vs, attacks from the listed type against these types will do half damage to the enemy.
- Resistance: listed as resist, taking attacks from this type will do half damage to you.
- Vulnerable: your type’s weaknesses. Attacks of these types will do double damage – watch out!
So, for instance, Offensively a Ground-type Pokemon/move is Strong against Poison, Rock, Steel, Fire and Electric types, dealing double damage to them. It only does 50% damage against Flying, Bug and Grass Pokemon. Defensively, that same Pokemon will take reduced damage from Poison, Rock and Electric Pokemon but also take double damage from Water, Grass and Ice – which is vulnerable to.
With that explained, let’s get into the type chart in full.

Pokémon GO! updates
A new post from the official Twitter account reveals that recently caught Dittos have been transforming into the new Hex Nut Pokemon, Meltan. A video attached to the tweet shows a trainer presenting Meltan to Professor Oak, who seems as baffled as we are.

In Pokémon: Let’s Go! Pikachu and Eevee, players will use a Bluetooth connection to transfer Pokémon captured in Pokémon Go. Upon transfer, players can use these Pokémon on their adventures through the Kanto region.
Pokémon transferred from Pokémon Go will appear in a place called the Go Park Complex, located in Fuchsia City, tying both games together nicely and will hopefully up your chances of finding rare and elusive Pokémon.
