Red Dead Redemption 2 had the biggest opening weekend of any entertainment product

In all of entertainment, nothing could come close to Red Dead Redemption 2’s opening weekend.

Rockstar has announced today that Red Dead Redemption 2 achieved the biggest opening weekend for an entertainment product. In three days, the game made $725 million at retail worldwide.

This figure is specifically about sell-through, meaning copies sold to consumers. The shipping values are likely much higher. Red Dead Redemption 2 also had the second-highest grossing entertainment launch, with GTA 5 still in the lead with $1 billion in retail sell-through.

GTA 5 launched on a Tuesday compared to Red Dead Redemption 2’s Friday, and is obviously the bigger brand, which explains why it’s still ahead. Digitally, the game “set new records” for full game sales on the PlayStation Network with the highest pre-orders, day one sales, and first three days sales ever.

Though the actual number of copies sold wasn’t revealed today, Take-Two usually updates investors on this data whenever it publishes quarterly financial results.
