Titanfall spin-off Apex Legends will not feature cross-play across PC, PS4 and Xbox One in the near future.
Speaking to VG247, Respawn’s design director Mackey McCandlish said cross-play across formats is something the team is interested in, but it’s not going to be a feature of the free-to-play multiplayer shooter around the launch window.
“Cross-play is definitely an opportunity; it’s not something at launch,” confirmed McCandlish.
“It’s definitely something we’re aware of and interested in. I can’t speak to whether or not we’ve had specific conversations. Right now it’s just like: ‘Let’s launch the game’.”
Current king of the battle royale genre, Fortnite, supports cross-play across multiple formats and devices, as do multiplayer games Realm Royale, Dauntless and Rocket League.
Apex Legends is available to download for free now on PC, PS4 and Xbox One and is Respawn’s entry in the crowded battle royale genre. It pits 60 players in teams of three against one another in the Titanfall universe, although crucially doesn’t feature the franchise’s unique selling points; Titans or wall-running.
