Sony Interactive Entertainment-published games, especially those with a multiplayer focus, could see release on other platforms.
Sony’s acquisition of Insomniac earlier this week indicates a renewed commitment to exclusives, particularly the types of games the maker of Spider-Man is known for.
When it comes to multiplayer games, however, Sony has more relaxed approach. Following the news, Worldwide Studios chairman Shawn Layden told Bloomberg that Sony is still committed to PlayStation exclusives, but indicated that multiplayer-focused titles could end up on other platforms.
“We must support the PlayStation platform — that is nonnegotiable,” said Layden. “That said, you will see in the future some titles coming out of my collection of studios which may need to lean into a wider installed base.”
Though the industry veteran didn’t specify these platforms, he’s more than likely talking about PC. Indeed, just this week, Readyset Heroes – a Sony Interactive Entertainment-published game, got an Epic Games Store page.
Readyset Heroes launches on PC and PS4 simultaneously on October 1, which is rare for SIE games that see release on PC. While small games hardly signal a policy shift, Readyset Heroes’ case could be an indication of what we might see from the company in the future.
It doesn’t seem far-fetched that SIE’s next big multiplayer game would also be available on PC.
