There's a Perfect PS4 Controller for Every Type of Game You Play

Wondering what the best controller for the PS4 is? Well it just so happens that Sony made it, because the classic controller that comes with the console is about as well rounded as it can get. The balance of quality, price, and perfect compatibility with PlayStation games is enough to make it the winner. But, that's not to say there aren't other controllers that may prove to be better for you or that can stand out as a superior option in specific games. You'll find racing wheels can give you a profoundly improved experience in driving games, and the same can be said of fight sticks in many fighting games. Some controllers' unique shapes can also improve your experience, as they may be a better fit for your hands, giving you long-term comfort that the standard controller might not offer. And, if you're looking ahead to the PlayStation 5, you can take some comfort in knowing that current PS4 controllers will work with the new console. However, Sony has confirmed that they'll only work with PlayStation 4 games, so you'll need new controllers to play PlayStation 5 games. That said, most PlayStation 4 controllers also make great options for PC gaming. So, if you're still looking to pick up a new controller, these are the best you can get.

TL;DR – These are the Best PS4 Controllers:

1. Sony DualShock 4

Best PS4 Controller

[poilib element="commerceCta" json="%7B%22image%22%3A%7B%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fassets1.ignimgs.com%2F2019%2F04%2F25%2FDualShock41556225218438.png%22%2C%22styleUrl%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fassets1.ignimgs.com%2F2019%2F04%2F25%2FDualShock41556225218438_%7Bsize%7D.png%22%2C%22id%22%3A%225cc21ccee4b0e5cc9bd625c9%22%7D%2C%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fzdcs.link%2F3kxO2%22%2C%22title%22%3A%22DualShock%204%22%2C%22store%22%3A%22Amazon%22%2C%22additionalInfo%22%3A%22%22%2C%22ourPick%22%3Atrue%7D"] Sony may have let Microsoft take the lead in the controller design contest for a little while, but when it introduced the DualShock 4, it had a winner on its hand. The DualShock 4 moved the controller's design forward in a way Sony hadn't really done with the PS2 or PS3 controllers. Though the DualShock 4 may now be superseded by the DualSense controller for the PS5, that doesn't mean that his old stalwart doesn't still have its place. Whether you're still playing on a PS4 or playing backward-compatible games on the PS5, the DualShock 4 controller is up to the task. It's thick, rounded grips offer a favorable hold even for larger hands. The triggers on the DualShock 4 have plenty of surface area and offer just enough resistance without making your fingers get sore. Thanks to Bluetooth support, the DualShock 4 also works just as well as a phone controller without needing any extra accessories.

2. Astro C40 TR

Best Wireless PS4 Controller

[poilib element="commerceCta" json="%7B%22image%22%3A%7B%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fassets1.ignimgs.com%2F2019%2F04%2F25%2FAstroC40-TR1556224829961.jpg%22%2C%22styleUrl%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fassets1.ignimgs.com%2F2019%2F04%2F25%2FAstroC40-TR1556224829961_%7Bsize%7D.jpg%22%2C%22id%22%3A%225cc21b44e4b0f108f8f17baf%22%7D%2C%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fzdcs.link%2FGbLY8%22%2C%22title%22%3A%22Astro%20C40%20TR%22%2C%22store%22%3A%22Amazon%22%2C%22additionalInfo%22%3A%22%22%2C%22ourPick%22%3Afalse%7D"] Ever since Microsoft introduced the Xbox One Elite Controller, I've been waiting for Sony to release their own version of a high-end DualShock 4 controller. While Sony has still yet to release such a prestigious controller, the Astro C40 TR is an arguably better controller overall. Not only does it include swappable thumbstick tops and multiple D-pads, you can even swap entire assemblies on this controller to make yours more like an Xbox controller. Add in a pair of mappable back buttons and 12 hours of battery life (four more than the traditional DualShock 4), and you've got your hands on the best wireless PS4 controller. Few controllers offer this level of customization, which may be what has made stock of this controller so scarce. But, if you do get your hands on one, you'll also be able to use it on PC.

3. Nacon Revolution Pro

Best Third-Party PS4 Controller

[poilib element="commerceCta" json="%7B%22image%22%3A%7B%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fassets1.ignimgs.com%2F2019%2F02%2F06%2F41e-lSqpFHL_AC_SX430_1549497181258.jpg%22%2C%22styleUrl%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fassets1.ignimgs.com%2F2019%2F02%2F06%2F41e-lSqpFHL_AC_SX430_1549497181258_%7Bsize%7D.jpg%22%2C%22id%22%3A%225c5b7362e4b035b3f8fe7597%22%7D%2C%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fzdcs.link%2Fw7dVb%22%2C%22title%22%3A%22Nacon%20Revolution%20Pro%22%2C%22store%22%3A%22Amazon%22%2C%22additionalInfo%22%3A%22%22%2C%22ourPick%22%3Afalse%7D"] Revolution Pro Controller is an officially licensed gamepad with some welcome tweaks when compared to Sony's DualShock. It certainly wins in the looks department, with a swanky LED below the right analog stick. More importantly, the D-Pad has larger wings for better control and the triggers and shoulder buttons have been contoured for maximum comfort. Just like the stock controller, there's even a touchpad and a share button. But, the Revolution Pro Controller adds shortcut buttons on the underside of the controller. It also ditches the original controller's Micro USB port in favor of USB Type-C, though wireless connectivity is gone as well.

4. Horipad FPS Plus

Best Xbox-Style PS4 Controller

[poilib element="commerceCta" json="%7B%22image%22%3A%7B%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fassets1.ignimgs.com%2F2020%2F03%2F24%2FHoripadFPS-Plus1585088345817.jpeg%22%2C%22styleUrl%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fassets1.ignimgs.com%2F2020%2F03%2F24%2FHoripadFPS-Plus1585088345817_%7Bsize%7D.jpeg%22%2C%22id%22%3A%225e7a875fe4b08e237d61fe07%22%7D%2C%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fzdcs.link%2F2kqXE%22%2C%22title%22%3A%22Horipad%20FPS%20Plus%22%2C%22store%22%3A%22Amazon%22%2C%22additionalInfo%22%3A%22%22%2C%22ourPick%22%3Afalse%7D"] Some people just don't like the mirrored thumbsticks of the DualShock controllers, and if you fall into that camp, the Horipad FPS Plus is the solution. The Horipad FPS Plus features a target button with three levels of sensitivity and thumbsticks with larger grooves to keep your thumbs comfortable. It doesn’t have some of the fancier elements of other controllers like the lightbar function, but it does have a clickable trackpad, which makes it unique. Overall it's a solid choice for those who just want a comfortable, easy-to-use controller, or those who are more accustomed to Microsoft's Xbox gamepad offerings. If you still go back to your PS3 games from time to time, it'll also work plugged into the older console.

5. Hori Fighting Commander

Best PS4 Fighting Controller

[poilib element="commerceCta" json="%7B%22image%22%3A%7B%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fassets1.ignimgs.com%2F2020%2F05%2F08%2FHoriFighting-Commander1588975979186.jpg%22%2C%22styleUrl%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fassets1.ignimgs.com%2F2020%2F05%2F08%2FHoriFighting-Commander1588975979186_%7Bsize%7D.jpg%22%2C%22id%22%3A%225eb5d970e4b0113dce7790c1%22%7D%2C%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fzdcs.link%2FOKLMn%22%2C%22title%22%3A%22Hori%20Fighting%20Commander%22%2C%22store%22%3A%22Amazon%22%2C%22additionalInfo%22%3A%22%22%2C%22ourPick%22%3Afalse%7D"] The Hori Fighting Commander is a wired controller for those of you who specialize in 2D fighting games. It offers a wider design than the standard controller along with the necessary six-button layout. This puts your standard thumb buttons alongside R1 and R2 for some solid thumb mashing action, though you still get R1, R2, L1, and L2 on the shoulders as well. Since the Hori Fighting Commander only has a D-Pad, it also includes a toggle so you can switch it to function as the left or right analog stick as well. And, thanks to a lengthy, 10-foot cable, you'll be able to take this controller with you to tournaments.

6. Razer Panthera Evo Arcade Stick

Best PS4 Fight Stick

[poilib element="commerceCta" json="%7B%22image%22%3A%7B%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fassets1.ignimgs.com%2F2019%2F10%2F07%2FRazerPanthera-Evo1570473997590.jpg%22%2C%22styleUrl%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fassets1.ignimgs.com%2F2019%2F10%2F07%2FRazerPanthera-Evo1570473997590_%7Bsize%7D.jpg%22%2C%22id%22%3A%225d9b8810e4b06e9668a554cd%22%7D%2C%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fzdcs.link%2F5d815%22%2C%22title%22%3A%22Razer%20Panthera%20Evo%22%2C%22store%22%3A%22Razer%22%2C%22additionalInfo%22%3A%22%22%2C%22ourPick%22%3Afalse%7D"] Fight pads and regular controllers are good for fighting games, but nothing quite beats a tried and true arcade fight stick. Firstly you can get a lot more precision out of a stick that's meant to be maneuvered by your whole hand rather than just your thumb. Likewise, a fight stick puts all the buttons at your literal fingertips, so you never have to move your thumb from one action to the next. The Razer Panthera Evo was our particular favorite fight stick for the PS4 simply because it was built from the ground up for the system. On the face of the arcade stick you get a PS4 touchpad that perfectly mirrors all the functionality of a traditional DualShock 4. Of course, it helps that Razer built one hell of a fight stick with a perfectly responsive lever and buttons.

7. Fanatec CSL Elite Racing Wheel

Best PS4 Racing Wheel

[poilib element="commerceCta" json="%7B%22image%22%3A%7B%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fassets1.ignimgs.com%2F2019%2F11%2F08%2FFanatecCSL-Elite-Racing-Wheel1573235235860.png%22%2C%22styleUrl%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fassets1.ignimgs.com%2F2019%2F11%2F08%2FFanatecCSL-Elite-Racing-Wheel1573235235860_%7Bsize%7D.png%22%2C%22id%22%3A%225dc5aa27e4b0ad969575f704%22%7D%2C%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fzdcs.link%2FNpLK2%22%2C%22title%22%3A%22Fanatec%20CSL%20Elite%20Racing%20Wheel%22%2C%22store%22%3A%22Fanatec%22%2C%22additionalInfo%22%3A%22%22%2C%22ourPick%22%3Afalse%7D"] If you're looking to add a bit of realistic flair to your hot laps in Gran Turismo Sport and other racing games on the PS4, there's nothing better than a racing wheel and the Fantec CSL Elite Racing Wheel is the best one you can get. It's a best belt-driven racing wheel designed exclusively for the PS4, so you've got all your typical Dualshock 4 buttons at your fingertips. This racing wheel also delivers quite the kick with 6Nm of torque delivered through its belt-drive force-feedback system. You'll be able to feel every bump on the road, virtual G-forces from braking hard, and the wheel fight you as you try to make tight turns. Rounding out this authentic racing simulation experience is the wheel's 30cm rim, which you'll be able to rotate it up to 1,080-degrees. There's also an integrated revolution meter and just above that on the wheel is a three-digit LED display you can use to monitor your speed or check which gear you're in. The only thing this racing wheel doesn't include is a set of pedals.
