Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2 will take full advantage of PS5

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade will look, run and play better on PS5, but you’ll have to wait for the sequel to really take full advantage of the hardware.

Since the moment it was announced, Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade felt like a decent, if predictable upgrade. It ramps up effects quality, offers framerate and visuals modes, brings sharper textures and so on.

The game even takes advantage of the DualSense controller’s adaptive triggers – all standard fare for a PS5 upgrade, as we’ve seen in most other last-gen games getting enhanced editions on PS5. Those technical upgrades are fine and dandy, of course, but they don’t quite take full advantage of the PS5 hardware.

For that, game director Tetsuya Nomura said, we’ll have to wait for Part 2. Speaking to Famitsu, the veteran director singled out things like DualSense haptics and 3D audio as features not supported in Intergrade.

“In terms of graphics, lighting and textures are the main adjustments [in Intergrade], but environmental effects such as fog have also been added to further enhance the sense of realism and immersion in the world,” said Nomura, as translated by VGC.

“As for adaptive triggers, they are partially supported. However, in terms of using all of the features of PlayStation 5, please wait for the next game where we can start from scratch,” he added.

This isn’t particularly surprising, as games rarely take full advantage of new hardware and its features at release. The Final Fantasy 7 Remake sequel will be developed with PS5 in mind, so it’s more likely to excel in showing off the hardware, not to mention build the game in ways not possible on PS4.

News about Part 2 are slim. We know it’s in production at Square Enix, and that the team wants to continue subverting fan expectations. The game has yet to be officially announced.
