Far Cry 6’s Urban Capital City Will Provide Some of the Game’s Biggest Challenges

Far Cry 6 marks a transition point for the series, as Ubisoft Toronto is replicating an entire country rather than just a region for its open world. This means that Far Cry 6’s Cuba-like country of Yara features urban cities as well as the wilderness. But rather than just a change of scene, the cities are also designed to ramp up the gameplay challenge.

Talking to IGN, Far Cry 6’s Narrative Director and Lead Writer, Navid Khavari, explained the team’s approach to Yara’s capital city, Esperanza. “It’s the notion that it’s Anton’s stronghold,” he said. “So when you have a dictator like Anton, he needs his core seat of power, so you’re going to encounter some of the game’s most difficult enemies when you approach Esperanza.”

Explaining further, Lead Game Designer David Grivel added “What we wanted to have with gameplay in the cities, specifically Esperanza, was that you can go in there right from the beginning of the game, but it’s going to be really challenging for you. So you’ve definitely got to adapt your playstyle when you go in there.”

From gameplay already revealed by Ubisoft, we’ve been able to see Anton’s heavily-armed troops patrolling the streets of the city, as well as his fleet of tanks. Armed and armoured vehicles like these tanks are a new step for Far Cry, and it seems like it will be within Aton’s cities that we’ll be facing them.

Ubisoft Toronto has also had to reconsider how many things work within a city, compared to the more classic rural settings on Far Cry games prior. “How does Far Cry work in an urban environment?” asked Grivel. “For us, that was full of opportunities for the AI, for example. How do they react to the player in such an area? You’re not in the middle of a jungle this time. An urban environment also says verticality, so that was another dimension that was exciting to explore.”
