Life Is Strange: True Colors Devs Say Series Legacy of Diversity Is Both Expectation and Freedom - E3 2021

Today at Square Enix's E3 2021 presentation, Deck Nine revealed a new trailer for Life Is Strange: True Colors focusing on the new empathy power of its protagonist, Alex. Like the other protagonists of the series, Alex's powers are supernatural — she's able to feel the true feelings of others and even take them upon herself to relieve those around her experiencing strong emotions.

And also like the other series protagonists, Alex follows in a series tradition of spotlighting diverse leads like Max Caulfield and Sean Diaz. She's a young Asian-American woman who has been through the foster care system, and she's bisexual, with two possible romantic interests: supporting characters Steph Gingrich and Ryan Lucan.

According to developer Deck Nine, continuing this tradition of telling diverse stories in Life Is Strange games was something the studio specifically wanted to embrace as they took up the mantle of the series from Life Is Strange 1 and 2 developer Dontnod.

Speaking to IGN, producer Rebeccah Bassell reflects that the games industry can often make it difficult for developers to tell stories about diverse experiences. In this environment, it was helpful for Deck Nine to come into a series with an existing expectation to tackle these kinds of topics, and an audience that was eager to embrace them.

"Having the established weight of the Life Is Strange history and franchise, and the precedent it set for allowing us to tell stories about anybody. These are real people, and they have these different real problems that are sometimes taboo to talk about or explore. I think first and foremost, all of us here are just huge fans of the original Life is Strange and respect the bold choices the decisions made to portray characters like this and to have queer characters at front and center, and women and all these other different aspects that make our world better.

"Having that legacy has been not really a weight, but a freedom. It allows us to tell these types of stories, knowing that there is a dedicated fan base of people that will embrace it fully and be hungry for it. So it's been really cool to see that reaction with the announcement of Life Is Strange: True Colors."

Life Is Strange: True Colors is planned for release on PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and Google Stadia on September 10, 2021, and the Life Is Strange Remastered Collection is coming not long after on September 30 as we learned today. We also spoke with Deck Nine about the game's empathy mechanic, and how they tied Alex's supernatural powers in with real-world expressions of emotion and empathy.

Square Enix Presents is a part of E3 2021, which is running from June 12 through 15. This year's E3 also includes events from Xbox, Ubisoft, Nintendo, Devolver Digital, and more, all of which can be watched and caught up on through IGN's Summer of Gaming.
