Diablo 2: Resurrected Is Making a Lot of Changes Based on Player Feedback

Blizzard has revealed it will be making a ton of changes to Diablo 2: Resurrected thanks to fans who participated in the Technical Alpha or sent in feedback after watching one of its livestreams, and these include key visual improvements, quality of life and accessibility changes, and more.

Blizzard shared how fans' feedback is helping to shape what Diablo 2: Resurrected will become, and it began by diving deep into Art & Visuals.

Art & Visuals

The team began by explaining that they have taken "great care to advance the visuals of monsters, heroes, items, and spells while preserving the familiar aesthetic of the original." In this mission, Blizzard wants to appease long-time fans of the game as well as new fans who they hope will feel "the same wonder and awe felt by fans two decades ago."

Some of the changes to Art & Visuals following feedback include the Sorceress' Lightning and Blizzard spells. Lightning's VFX has been enhanced with "a whiter and thicker visualization that is more reminiscent of the original VFX," and Blizzard has been adjusted to "better capture the destructive force of the original."

The Paladin's Holy Freeze has also been adjusted to represent its "distinct wispiness and colors from the original," Monster Targets underwent a color revision based on feedback, and more.

Mana and Health animations now better align with the filing of the globes, and item colors have been amplified to "bring out the more brilliant colors, bring more attention to the focus point(s), and add clarity to the image."

Quality of Life and Accessibility

Many Quality of Life changes will be added following the Technical Alpha, and many of them are focused on accessibility.

"From auto-gold pick up, large font modes, UI scaling (for PC players), and gamma/contrast settings to enhance readability, we’ve taken strides to equip players with customization options to suit their needs," Blizzard writes. "With these options, players may tweak the visibility of their HUD and graphics, finding the ideal balance between beautiful and gritty, or whatever their preference may be. We’ll be touching on our efforts to make Diablo II: Resurrected more accessible in a later, more detailed blog post."

Some user interface settings have been adjusted as well, including allowing for item names to be toggled on or off with a press of a button. If desired, players will also be able to keep the original "press and hold" method.

The Shared Stash will now have three tabs rather than one, the Compare tooltip can now be toggled on or off, the Automap will have new assets to improve readability, and there will now be a single Map option with three settings - left-minimap, right-minimap, and center-fullscreen - to help remove confusion.

Miscellaneous Updates and What's Next

There are a bunch of other changes and additions that will be implemented in Diablo 2: Resurrected, including the much-requested Clock feature that will let you see the time in-game.

Characters will also no longer spawn in a hostile place until the game is fully loaded, and the team has "removed extra grunts and yelps that were initially added."

As for what's next, Blizzard has reminded fans that all those who have pre-ordered Diablo 2: Resurrected will be able to experience these new changes in August's early access beta. Those who don't pre-order will also get a chance to play when the open beta launches shortly after.

"When we started working on Diablo II: Resurrected, we were humbled by such an incredible opportunity to plunge into the past and rebuild our nostalgia . . . but we also recognized that the original game is a classic for a reason, so we’d have to be prudent," Blizzard concluded. So many people, us included, love this game and want to see it reimagined authentically. We want to do right by this game and its players. Since our announcement at BlizzConline, it's been an incredible journey of development. Our collaboration with the community has given us the confidence and motivation to craft a title worthy of your expectations."

Diablo 2: Resurrected will be released on September 23, 2021. For more, check out our impressions, both good and bad, after trying out the Techincal Alpha.
