PUBG’s planes may now be on fire

PUBG’s latest update has introduced an original new twist.

PUBG continues to spice up its classic battle royale formula. The latest of these tweaks arrives as part of update 13.1, which is live now on the game’s test server on PC. 13.1 goes live August 4 for everyone else on PC, and August 12 on consoles.

The biggest change is what developer Krafton is calling emergency landing. The big cargo plane that brings all players to the map at the start of the match could now suffer an engine failure that causes it to catch on fire, sending it quickly hurtling towards the ground. Needless to say, this means that players who like to drop late won’t always be able to do so.

The plane suffering from this will move faster than a normal plane, and the fall height will vary. It also means that players will travel the farthest distance the earlier they jump, but that choice may not always be easy. The longer you wait, the shorter your glide distance is going to be. If you decide to stick it out and wait for it to finish its emergency landing, you’ll start the match with 50% of your HP gone.

Alongside this mechanic, Krafton is also making some updates to the recently-released Taego map. First, there’s now a Secret Room randomly hidden somewhere on the map that contains some of the rarest, most powerful gear – including items you can’t find anywhere else.

You’ll need a key to enter the room, and those can be found as loot – but they, too, are rare and hidden. Once you get a key, and manage to locate the room, you’ll be rewarded with items like Self AED, scopes, plenty of healing items and throwables, as well as a chance for Care Package-exclusive items.

You can also expect a big increase to the number of Care Package air drops across the entire game. You’ll now come across smaller air drops more frequently – between five and 15 – which drop as part of multi-Care Package drops.
