Sega has conceded that its vague reveal of a new Sonic the Hedgehog game due to launch in 2022 was “a bit premature” in a new interview.
Back in May, Sega announced that it is working on a new Sonic the Hedgehog game for release in 2022. There are no details – at all – about what this new title is going to be, and so far the only teaser we’ve got for the game features Sonic running… and nothing else other than an unexplained symbol flashing up during the trailer.
In an interview with 4Gamer, (via Nintendo Enthusiast), Sonic Team lead Takashi Iizuka says the company wanted to get something out in public about the game, but admits the offering was scant.
“We haven’t announced a brand new action game for the Sonic series since Sonic Forces, and that caused fans to worry,” said Iizuka in the interview. “While it was a bit premature, I wanted to at least take the occasion of the 30th anniversary to announce that a brand new title was in development.”
Regarding that mysterious symbol, he said:
“It is something symbolic that appears in the game, but the meaning is still a secret. However, I will say that it’s not something one would figure out through deduction. we’ll eventually share more details, so please wait a little longer.”
You can check the initial trailer at the very end of the video embedded above.
In development at Sonic Team, the upcoming title is coming to PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S in 2022. Nothing else about the game is known.
At least we’ve got Sonic Colors Ultimate coming this September, and then there’s the compilation game Sonic Origins coming next year, too. There’s also Sonic Prime, the 24-episode animated series, hitting Netflix in 2022.
