Middle-earth: Shadow of War hasn’t been announced, but oh ho ho! That won’t stop retailers trying to sell it.
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is one of those games that came out of nowhere, charming critics and players alike with the celebrated Nemesis system – which amazingly hasn’t been copied in every major release since.
Its success and lack of rivals seemed to guarantee a sequel, but Warner Bros. has been very coy on that topic, refusing to commit to Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor 2, or whatever.
Apparently the publisher hasn’t been so reticent with retail partners, though; Target posted a listing for something called Middle-earth: Shadow of War this weekend.
Although the information has been removed, the page title is clearly visible if you visit the link, and the ever-reliable Wario64 posted screenshots of the Middle-earth: Shadow of War listing on Twitter.
From these we can see Middle-earth: Shadow of War is slated for PS4 and Xbox One on August 22, was once again developed by Monolith, and will see the return of the Nemesis system. This time, our heroes will “confront the full power of the Dark Lord Sauron and his ringwraiths”, apparently. Players will “forge a new Ring of Power and dominate Mordor” with their own orc armies.
There’s a $99 Gold Edition of Middle-earth: Shadow of War which comes with four expansions and a gold war chest. There are two Nemesis expansions called Slaughter Tribe and Outlaw Tribe, which add “a new Orc tribe featuring new enemies, followers, missions, abilities, weapons, Fortress and wilderness updates and a Mythic Gear Set”.
The other two expansions are called Blade of Galadriel and The Desolation of Mordor. These are new story campaigns for Middle-earth: Shadow of War, with additional playable characters, abilities, side missions, enemies and allies.
